Camera bumps, sweet 3D print 🍬 and a EUR 150K UX job you didn’t ask for

Unrequested design news
Are you annoyed by your smartphone's camera bump? What if you could remove it and add it only when needed?
Have you ever been afraid of the cast saw when getting a cast removed, whether as a child or even as an adult? If this idea works out, maybe you'll be less scared.
Finally, the 3D printer has a sweet use.
Unrequested UX/UI mini-lessons
Ever looked at data and thought, "Wait, that doesn't make sense"
Welcome to Simpson's Paradox, a statistical twist where trends can flip when data is combined. For instance, a study might show men are more likely to be admitted to university, but a deeper dive reveals that women are favored in specific departments.
For example, the study at UC Berkeley of 1973, showed primarily that men appeared to be admitted more than women.

Wikipedia
But when broken down by department, the different rejection percentages reveal the different difficulties of getting into the department, and it also shows that women applied to more competitive departments with lower acceptance rates (like English), while men applied to less competitive ones (like Engineering). The key point is that the apparent bias was due to the departments women chose, not discrimination in admissions.

This happens when we overlook confounding variables—hidden factors that can skew the results.
In UX design, understanding this paradox is key to avoiding computation/statistical bias. When we analyze user data, it’s easy to misinterpret trends if we don't account for all the influencing factors, like device type or user experience. Ignoring these variables can lead to faulty conclusions about a design's success. By addressing these hidden influences, we can make more informed, user-centered decisions.

Ciao! Talk to you in a month-ish 🕐
I'm Alessandra Stagno, a Lead Product Designer from Italy, now based in the Netherlands, with over 8 years of experience in Product Design – not the physical kind, though. The UX and UI kind. Yes, because in Italy, people think you make chairs if you say you’re a Product Designer. Never made chairs – unfortunately. But give me a horrible website or software with a questionable user experience, and you’ll find me in a room fixing it, saying: “Oooh! Now it’s clean, and I understand what I’m supposed to do, let’s test it!”
