Handling clients in UX/UI design: keep it simple & smooth
Many of my students ask me about this: how do you handle clients and Product Managers—or stakeholders—in general) effectively as a UX/UI designer? The truth is, working with clients isn’t easy—it’s about clear communication, managing expectations, and keeping things on track. Here are three ways to make client handling easier:
➝ explain, don’t just deliver
People don’t always know the “why” behind design choices. Instead of just making changes, take a moment to explain them. A quick sketch or a simple example can help them see the logic. The more they understand, the fewer back-and-forths you’ll have.
➝ set boundaries early
Ever had a project that just wouldn’t end? That’s often because there were no clear limits. From the start, define what’s included, how many revisions are allowed, and when feedback is due. This keeps things fair for both sides.
➝ focus on goals, not just looks
It’s easy for clients to get stuck on visuals—“Make it pop!”—but good design is about solving problems. Shift the conversation to what matters: “How does this help the user?” This makes feedback more useful and keeps projects on the right path.
Good stakeholder handling is about guiding the process with clarity and confidence. Keep things structured, communicate well, and focus on the user. That’s what leads to the best results.
