From robot horses to ROI: How to prove UX pays off

Unrequested design news
What if AI works at the OS level instead of just being an interface for a single tool? A telepathic essay.
Imagine a world where, instead of riding a bike or a motorbike, you get around on a robot that looks like a horse. Not a real horse — but a friendly robot one that walks, runs, and even takes you through the city or nature. I saw this concept and I already want one.
Who hasn’t dreamed of talking to animals as a kid? What if you could talk to a dolphin someday?

Show me the money! How UX Research proves it’s worth every penny
Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about how UX research doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. Many see it as a “nice-to-have” rather than essential. One way to change that? Show its Return on Investment (ROI).
Here are 5 steps to calculating UX ROI:
1. Identify the problem and set benchmarks
Figure out what’s broken—what’s frustrating users or costing the company money? Gather data on the current state (e.g., time spent, errors, support calls) to measure improvements later.
2. Define goals and expected outcomes
Set clear goals that align with business priorities. For example:
Increase conversions from 5% to 10% (revenue)
Reduce support calls by 15% (cost savings)
3. Gather data to estimate ROI
Compare the current situation with expected improvements and the cost of the redesign. If streamlining a process saves time, calculate the value of that saved time in dollars.
4. Calculate ROI and convert to money
Use the formula: ROI (%) = (Return - Investment) / Investment × 100
For example, if a redesign costs $10,000 but saves $17,450 per semester in support costs, the ROI is 74.5%.
5. Communicate results effectively
Keep it simple: “This project saves $14,900 annually. For every $1 spent, we gain $1.75.”
Start small, use real numbers, and soon you’ll clearly show that UX isn’t just about better design—it’s a smart business decision.

Ciao! Talk to you in a month-ish 🕐
I'm Alessandra Stagno, a Lead Product Designer from Italy, now based in the Netherlands, with over 8 years of experience in Product Design – not the physical kind, though. The UX and UI kind. Yes, because in Italy, people think you make chairs if you say you’re a Product Designer. Never made chairs – unfortunately. But give me a horrible website or software with a questionable user experience, and you’ll find me in a room fixing it, saying: “Oooh! Now it’s clean, and I understand what I’m supposed to do, let’s test it!”
